Take a drive with us to Wise, VA to visit The Health Wagon, a nonprofit organization providing mobile health services to the medically underserved in Southwest Virginia since 1980.

On this learning journey, we will share the experience of patients seeking healthcare in and around Wise County, VA. We will first visit The Health Wagon mobile clinic, which has been traveling the mountain roads since 1980, when Sr. Bernie Kenny with the order of Medical Missionaries of Mary came to Appalachia at the request of the Richmond Catholic Diocese. Since then, the Health Wagon has continued to adapt and expand to meet patients’ needs. Our learning journey will then take us to one of two clinic locations where we will see how telemedicine is working to meet the specialty care needs of local residents and talk with the caring and inclusive staff and volunteers.

The Health Wagon is committed to providing compassionate, quality health care to medically underserved people in the mountains of Appalachia. The Health Wagon serves individuals and families with free, culturally sensitive, integrated health care. They provide primary and preventive care, dental, behavioral health, telehealth, and specialty care, and strategically coordinate community outreach efforts, like Remote Area Medical – Wise Health Expedition.
