On the Arts & Culture Learning Journey, we'll take a stroll down Abingdon’s Main Street to the Barter Theatre, one of the longest running professional theaters in the nation. There, we'll learn about the Barter and how it has served as a cultural and economic anchor in Abingdon since 1933. Next, we'll stop by the Arts Depot for lunch to hear from some of their founding artists about their experience creating the Arts Depot and making their living as working artists in Abingdon. Then we'll take a tour of the William King Museum of Art and learn about the role the museum plays in bringing fine art to Appalachia and in preserving and promoting Appalachian art. Finally, we'll return to the Martha Washington Inn for a roundtable discussion of ways to use arts and culture as an economic development tool and for creative placemaking.
